Welcome to the first day of the unforgettable Huchuy Qosqo Trek to Machu Picchu. Today you’ll wake up early at 6 am. The journey will begin with a drive from your hotel to the quaint village of Tauca 3,750 m (12,303 ft). This is where our feet will first meet the trail.

We will set a steady pace across level terrain, surrounded by the rich tapestry of Andean valleys. The land here is fertile, brimming with crops of corn, quinoa, potatoes, and a variety of Andean tubers, painting a vibrant picture of local agriculture.

Hiking in the Puna.

As we ascend towards the pass at 4,050 m (13,287 ft), the landscape will transform before our eyes into the stark beauty of the High Andean Savannah, also known as Puna. The vegetation here is sparse, dominated by “ichu” or high altitude grass. The panoramic views we’ll encounter are breathtaking. The Vilcabamba Mountain Range stretches out before us. It is adorned by the snow-capped peaks of Veronica, Pitusiray, Chicon, and San Juan.

After reaching the pass, we will begin our descent to the Huchuy Qosqo plains, following a path that winds its way into the Cauca Ravine. We’ll come across various archeological sites, with chances to observe unique wild plants, once harvested by the Incas for sustenance.

Our trek will then guide us downhill to the Leon Punku ravine. Discover remnants of an Inca bridge and trail, with massive rocks and boulders guiding the stream towards Huchuy Qosqo 3,650 m (11,975 ft).

Huchuy Qosqo.

On arriving at Huchuy Qosqo, we’ll find ourselves amidst an impressive Inca complex. Which is set on a plateau with sweeping views. The guide will share tales of the complex’s history and the Inca civilization, that once thrived here, providing insights into the sophisticated stonework and architecture.

Concluding our exploration, we will venture downhill to the village of Lamay 2,900 m (9,514 ft). From here, our transportation will take us to our next stop: Ollantaytambo.
