All of our local guides have degrees in tourism and a minimum of 2 years experience. They all speak English and Spanish and many also speak Quechua, the native language of Peru.
A Quechua speaking guide allows you to connect more deeply with your surroundings and the remote locals, who often only speak Spanish. It also allows them a deeper understanding of the history and legends that help to weave the fabric of the rich cultures of Peru, and share them with you.
Oftentimes, a guide can either ensure the holiday of a lifetime or can spoil a trip with their mistakes. That’s why at 69 Explorer we have a rigorous training program and unlike most companies, our guides are not freelance- they work with us, and only us, full time.

In order to guarantee your comfort and safety, each of our guides are highly trained in all aspects of the trip, including responding to emergencies. Each guide undergoes annual training in guiding and first aid, and carries specialized equipment on journeys to ensure travelers safety: from emergency oxygen to satellite phones.

Liz was our guide for both our trip from Cusco to the Sacred Valley and also Machu Picchu. On our trip to Ollantaytambo, Liz and Juan Carlos (our driver) took us to Chinchero and stopped to see a textile demonstration, had lunch and drank chicha. We also made stops at Maras and Moray. Liz and Juan Carlos were both very friendly and informative. I would recommend them for this trip as we would have missed a lot of things otherwise. Liz also took us on two circuits of Machu Picchu. It was nice to have her walk us through the site as we didn't have to worry about any logistics. We could just relax and enjoy it &while she explained the highlights and answered our many questions.
We did the Lares Trek with Sam Travel. It was very well organized and the staff communicated well with us, both before leaving our country and when we arrived. All the staff in the trek were great and so hard working. The food was plentiful (more than we could eat), had lots of fresh vegetables and they accomodated dietary needs of our group. Our guide, Juan Carlos, was amazing. He was professional, respectful to the team and travellers, knowledgeable and personable. He was great to hang out with for four days and we learned so much from him - history, language, culture, flora and fauna. We were impressed with his genuine and respectful interactions with the local communities we visited. Our two kids also loved Juan Carlos and were sad to say goodbye to him. We were surprised and incredible grateful when Sam Travel somehow acquired circuit 2 tickets for Macchu Picchu on our behalf, and we were able to see more of the site than we had expected. Thanks for an unforgettable experience!
