Visiting Machu Picchu is usually a visit that requires months of prior preparation and planning, this due to number of daily visitors the Citadel receives every day. However, in 69 Explorer we are committed to make your dream vacation real!

How can we make it possible?

This will be a tall order, but our experienced team will be with you step after step:

  • This Tour will work as a regular 2-day experience to Machu Picchu by train. (Full itinerary explained below)
  • Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, your guide will take you straight to the Ministerio de Cultura office. They issue 1000 tickets for the next day, every day. This is the only place to get last minute tickets.
  • Depending on the season, your chances will be higher. Usually, shoulder months or low season months have better chances.
  • Requirements:
    • Tickets can only be bought in cash.
    • Bring your physical passport or ID.
    • The purchase can only be completed personally.
  • We will make sure to take the earliest train possible to Aguas Calientes, improving our chances to be ahead in the line.

Itinerary

The day will start early in the morning, with your guide picking you up from your hotel in Cusco. From here, our driver will shuttle you to the train station in Ollantaytambo. This scenic drive will take about 1.5 hours, and will be the perfect opportunity to admire the skies above the Sacred Valley or take a short nap.

Depending on availability you will take the 5:05 am or the 6:10 am train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes.

Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes.

This Train ride is known for its beautiful landscapes, that will take you from the dry and rocky Highlands to the abundant in flora and fauna Urubamba Canyon in the Cloud Forest. This experience is only possible in few areas were this transition ecosystem from the highlands to the amazon is available. Prepare to be amazed!

After 1 hour 45 minutes you will arrive to Aguas Calientes, the town in the base of Machu Picchu Mountain and the place where you will get the tickets for the next day.

Your guide will take you to the office, located just a few minutes walking from the station. There you will join the queue. Remember: the earliest you get to Aguas Calientes, the better your chances are.

Once you get your tickets, your guide will take you to your hotel to check-in. Then, depending on the time of the day, you will go for lunch or dinner at a local restaurant.

Depending on the schedule of the entrances acquired the previous day, you will have a 2-hour guided tour in Machu Picchu.

Your guide will take you on a historical journey, sharing all his knowledge about the structures, temples, plazas, palaces, agricultural terraces and many more at Machu Picchu.

Once again, depending of the schedule of the tickets. You will have time before or after your visit to discover Aguas Calientes at your own pace. We recommend visiting the hot springs, the artisans’ market or the many restaurants and cafeterias in the town.

Return to Cusco

In order to have enough time for your visit, we will arrange your return in the 6:10 pm train to Ollantaytambo. This, due to the possibility that your entrance to Machu Picchu was obtained for the 3 pm schedule.

The train will take you along the same route of the way in. Giving a new chance to spot wonders that might have been missed in the way in, like Wiñay Wayna, an archeological complex in the middle of the Short Inca trail.

Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, your driver will be waiting you for the shuttle back to Cusco. You will arrive to Cusco around 10pm, wrapping up a trip of a lifetime.

  • Entrance Fees to Hot Springs or Museums in Aguas Calientes: If you wish to visit the hot springs or any museums in Aguas Calientes, you will need to cover the entrance fees separately.
  • Travel Insurance: Travel insurance is not included in the trip. It is highly recommended that you purchase travel insurance for your trip to cover any unexpected events or emergencies.
  • Tips and Gratuities: While tipping is optional, it is a good practice to tip for good service in Peru.
  • Additional Activities or Personal Expenses: Any additional activities not mentioned in the itinerary, or personal expenses such as souvenirs, are not included and will be at your own cost.
  • Machu Picchu Mountain or Huayna Picchu Tickets: If you wish to climb Machu Picchu Mountain or Huayna Picchu, these require separate tickets and are not included in the standard day trip package.

  • Comfortable Clothing: Wear light, breathable clothing. Layers are recommended due to changing weather conditions throughout the day.
  • Sturdy Footwear: Comfortable hiking shoes or walking boots with good grip are essential for navigating the uneven and sometimes slippery terrain of Machu Picchu.
  • Rain Gear: A lightweight, waterproof jacket or poncho is crucial, especially during the rainy season (November to March).
  • Sun Protection: High-altitude sun can be intense. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunblock to protect yourself from UV rays.
  • Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is important. Carry a refillable water bottle. There are places to refill it in Aguas Calientes and at the entrance of Machu Picchu.
  • Snacks: Pack some energy bars, fruits, or nuts for quick energy boosts. Eating is not allowed inside Machu Picchu, but you can snack before entering or after exiting.
  • Camera or Smartphone: Capture your memories. Make sure you have enough memory and battery.
  • Small Backpack: A compact daypack is useful to carry your essentials. Note that large bags are not allowed in Machu Picchu and need to be stored outside.
  • Cash: For purchases in Aguas Calientes, tips, and other small expenses. Credit cards are accepted in some places, but cash (in Peruvian soles) is more universally accepted.

Do I need to bring my passport for the trip?

In order to enter Machu Picchu you must have a valid passport. Ensure that it is valid on the day of your visit.

The train ride from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Entrance fees to Machu Picchu are included.

Wear comfortable and breathable clothing. Dress in layers as the weather can change throughout the day. Sturdy footwear is essential for walking and exploring Machu Picchu.

Plan to bring snacks or purchase meals in Aguas Calientes as meals are not provided.

No, large backpacks are not allowed inside Machu Picchu. A small daypack is ideal for carrying essentials. Storage facilities are available at the entrance for larger bags.

The Best Circuit in Machu Picchu is #2. In the case this circuit in not available we recommed a combination of #1 & #3.

Client Cancellation:

To cancel, send a written notice to “69 Explorer.” The initial deposit is not refundable. Check your insurance for potential coverage for cancellation reasons.

Cancellations more than 15 days before departure result in a 50% deposit forfeiture. For cancellations between 7 and 15 days before departure, if full payment has been made, 50% of the total cost will be refunded. No refunds are given for cancellations less than 48 hours before departure or for partial tour cancellations.

Alterations/Cancellations by Us:

In the event of unforeseen circumstances such as technical issues, adverse weather, strikes, government actions, or civil disturbances, “69 Explorer” will try to provide alternative arrangements or equivalent trips, without offering refunds. Itinerary adjustments may be necessary, but we will aim to maintain the agreed services.

Significant changes will be communicated before your trip, with comparable alternative plans offered. Any additional costs from these changes are the client’s responsibility. We cannot compensate for expenses like international flights, visas, vaccinations, etc.

If “69 Explorer” cancels a tour, a full refund will be provided.

All 69 Explorer trips are guided by Local Experienced, English-speaking guides familiar with the trail and Incan history.

For our Group Experiences we recommend 18 – 45 years old.
