Safety on the Trek to Machu Picchu

The Inca Trail is breathtaking, but it’s also high-altitude terrain. At 69 Explorer, your safety is front and center. Every measure, every piece of gear, every protocol is designed to keep you moving confidently — from the first step to the last.

Altitude Sickness and Safety Concerns

Altitude can affect anyone. Even experienced hikers can feel its effects. That’s why our guides carry satellite phones at all times.

These phones are your lifeline in emergencies, even in the most remote sections of the trail. Travelers can also make personal calls for a small fee — but the priority is safety first.

With constant monitoring and experienced guides, we reduce risks so you can focus on the adventure, not the altitude.

First Aid and Medical Support

Every 69 Explorer trekking team carries a complete first aid kit — bandages, creams, and essential medications to tackle minor injuries.

For altitude-related issues, oxygen is on hand to assist anyone experiencing shortness of breath or discomfort.

Our guides are trained to respond fast and effectively, so help is always there when you need it.

Oximeter

We track your vital signs with an oximeter and a blood pressure monitor.

These tools help our team detect early signs of altitude sickness and react immediately — adjusting pace, providing oxygen, or taking other measures to keep you safe and comfortable.

Emergency Evacuation Procedures

Emergencies are rare, but we plan for everything.

If a traveler needs urgent medical attention, we use a stretcher and oxygen to stabilize them and transport to a facility in Ollantaytambo or Cusco.

Even in unexpected situations, you can be confident that professional support is always ready.

Physical Fitness and Medical Certification

The Inca Trail demands good physical fitness. Travelers with pre-existing conditions or over 50 should consult a doctor before trekking.

A medical certificate is required to confirm you’re ready for high-altitude trekking.

By prioritizing fitness, we make sure every traveler can enjoy the trail safely and fully.

Alternative Trek Support

On some alternative treks, we provide an extra horse for emergencies.

If you need a break or cannot continue on foot, the horse will carry you safely until you’re ready to continue or return to the trailhead.

This backup ensures that every adventurer can keep moving forward with confidence.

Safety Priority

At 69 Explorer, safety is non-negotiable.

We combine experienced guides, medical kits, emergency procedures, vital monitoring, and high-altitude support to make sure your trek is as safe as it is unforgettable.

Take the 7-color mountain tour with 69 explorers, the whole organization was spectacular, from start to finish. Our guide Ray, he was very patient with the group, helped us all be together and we could get to the top. The views are spectacular and everything was worth it.
