Itinerary

Upon your arrival to Cusco, we will take you to your hotel. Once you do the check in, you will receive a short briefing and then have the rest of the morning for resting and acclimatizingIn the afternoon, you will have some free time to explore the city on your own.

  • 3* Accommodation: Maytaq Wasin or Waman Qorikancha
  • 4* Accommodation: Costa del Sol Ramada, Casa Andina Private Collection or Novotel Hotels

We start this beautiful day at 7:30am, when your guide picks you up at your Cusco hotel in our private van. Our route to the Sacred Valley of the Incas leads us towards Pisac. We stop first at the Mirador of Taray to enjoy an expansive view of the Urubamba Valley and its traditional farming villages. You will see how the agriculture in the Sacred Valley has changed little in the past five hundred years. Onward, we drive to the archeological site of Pisac, where you can see an impressive Inca cemetery with more than 2,000 tombs.

There, we can admire the carefully engineered farming terraces carved into the mountain, explore the Inca tunnel and the religious area of this important citadel. Here, we will spend about 2 hours, exploring the Inca city. Then, we head down to the colorful market of Pisac, spend about 20 minutes visiting it and afterwards drive to Urubamba for lunch.

Our next stop is the archeological site of Moray also known as “The Greenhouse of the Incas” a deep basin of architectural wonder. Levels of terraces are carved into a huge bowl, which was carefully engineered by the Incas. The terraces have varied microclimates depending on how deep into the bowl they are placed.  Archeologists believe that they were used by the Incas to discover the optimal growing conditions for their crops and experiment in hybridization.

Continuing on our journey to the colonial town of Maras, we look down onto the “pre-Inca salt mines,” called Salineras in Spanish. Thousands of salt pans have been passed down through countless generations and used for salt extraction since before Inca times. A hot spring at the top of the valley discharges a small stream of heavily salt laden water, which is diverted into salt pans and evaporated to produce salt. This is one of the few places in the world where you can find naturally pink salt!

Finally, we drive to Ollantaytambo, taking the time to explore the Inca village that has remained intact since Inca times and the massive Inca Ruins, with a tour provided by our guide. Visit the massive architecture of the Sun Temple at the top of the formidable terraces and learn about the importance of this site for the Inca during the beginning of the Spanish conquest. Finally, return to Cusco and spend the night in a hotel.

Ausangate Trek 4 days with Rainbow Mountain

Moderate 4 Days / 3 Nights

An unforgettable journey with 69 Explorer as we explore the breathtaking Ausangate Trek. Known for its stunning natural beauty, the Ausangate Trek invites adventurers to immerse themselves in an authentic Andean experience.

As we embark on this multi-day excursion, traverse through the diverse landscapes of Ausangate, Peru. The trek promises an awe-inspiring journey, with turquoise lakes, the famous Palomani Pass, and the iconic Apu Ausangate. Be captivated by the vibrant hues of Rainbow Mountain, a highlight that adds a splash of color to the rugged terrain.

We recommend planning your trek during the dry season, which offers clear skies and more stable weather conditions. This period typically runs from May to September. However, for those who prefer the lush green landscapes, the rainy season is recommended.

For the trek essential items include a high-quality sleeping bag suitable for low temperatures (think around -4°F or -20°C), suitable hiking gear, and, of course, your camera to capture the stunning vistas. Don’t forget to bring travel insurance for peace of mind during your adventure.

One of the trek’s highlights is the chance to engage with local communities. Experience firsthand the rich culture of the Andean people, known for their traditional weaving and herding of llama and alpaca. This cultural immersion is a truly unique aspect of the Ausangate Trek.

We’ll ensure you’re well-prepared for the high altitude. Our guides will introduce you to coca tea, a local remedy for altitude sickness. We also recommend spending a few days in Cusco to acclimate before the trek begins.

The Ausangate Trek without a guide is possible for experienced trekkers, but we recommend joining a guided tour to fully appreciate the area. Our knowledgeable guides will enhance your experience, sharing insights into the Inca Trail’s legacy and the region’s natural wonders.

Lastly, the soothing hot springs along the route offer a perfect respite after a day’s hike. These natural pools are not only relaxing but also provide a unique way to connect with nature.

Get ready for an adventure of a lifetime with 69 Explorer. We will guide you through one of the most spectacular mountains in Peru, ensuring an unforgettable experience.
