Bathroom Situation on the Salkantay Trek / Our Bathrooms vs. Others

June 25, 2026 5 min. read

The Salkantay Trail, often called the Wild Mountain, has grown significantly in popularity. As more hikers arrive daily, travel agencies and local communities have improved conditions, making this route an increasingly desirable choice. It is necessary to adapt to these modern standards, which are gradually leaving behind basic tents and outdoor restrooms.

What is the Salkantay Trek like?

The Salkantay Trek features mountain ascents, rocky paths, and stunning glacier views. The main characteristic of this trek is the variety of ecosystems you pass through, transitioning from the high-altitude cold of the Andes to the lush cloud forests of Cusco.

What can you find along the trail?

Along the trail, you can find local shops selling snacks, as well as premium campsites that include comfortable beds, private bathrooms, and even hot tubs. This is the case with our panoramic Sky Domes, where you can rest in glass-roofed suites after a long day of hiking.

One of the biggest questions for travelers on long hikes is the bathroom situation, as comfort is a key factor in your overall experience. Here is what you can expect.

Restrooms Along the Salkantay Trail

When you reach the foothills of Salkantay, near the start of the hike to Humantay Lake, you will find local shops where you can use restrooms for a small fee. However, the situation varies when you are at your campsite or dining areas. Not all tour operators provide the same amenities.

The Bathroom Situation with Standard Operators

While thousands of agencies offer the Salkantay Trek, the level of comfort depends on the provider.

  • Standard Camping: Local providers often require you to use outdoor facilities or a basic toilet tent with a portable plastic toilet. While functional, it is rarely ideal in a high-altitude setting.
  • Hygiene: In standard camping scenarios, you often cannot shower at your campsite unless you rent one from a local household. You will likely need to rely on wet wipes to stay clean during the trek.

Bathrooms in Our Sky Domes

Our innovative Sky Dome service offers more than just a night under the stars. You will rest in comfortable hotel-style beds and enjoy amenities like Wi-Fi and spacious dining areas. Most importantly, we provide the ultimate reward for a long day of hiking:

  • Private Comfort: You will have access to clean, comfortable bathroom facilities, ensuring you do not have to brave the cold at night. Our facilities are maintained to high standards so you can feel right at home.
  • Hot Showers: Cleanliness matters. You will be able to take a hot shower after your hike to relax, change into fresh clothes, and settle into your bed.

Opinions vary on what constitutes “essential” comfort while trekking, but there is nothing wrong with enjoying extra amenities after a long day of physical effort. It is no longer uncommon to find campsites that offer these comforts—treat your senses and get the rest you deserve!
