Train to KM104.
We will start our day with an early morning departure from Ollantaytambo. Here, we will board a train that whisks us away to the trailhead at Km 104. As the train winds along the Urubamba River, prepare to be enchanted by the ever-changing scenery, a prelude to the wonders that lie ahead.
Upon arrival at Km 104, our hike commences. We will cross a suspension bridge, marking the official start of our Short Inca Trail trek. The path ahead promises a blend of natural beauty and historical richness. We will pace ourselves, ensuring we fully absorb the splendor surrounding us.
Time to star hiking.
Our first significant landmark will be the fascinating Inca site of Chachabamba. Here, we will delve into its history, uncovering the purpose it served during the Inca Empire. The site’s intricate stonework and strategic location set the tone for the marvels to come.
As we ascend, the trail will unveil a variety of flora and fauna unique to the Andean cloud forest. We will be trekking through a biodiverse haven, with opportunities to spot exotic birds and lush vegetation. The ascent, while challenging, is immensely rewarding, offering spectacular views and a sense of accomplishment.
Wiñay Wayna.
Our most anticipated moment arrives as we approach Wiñay Wayna. This impressive Inca ruin is famous for its stunning agricultural terraces. We will explore this site, gaining insights into the advanced agricultural techniques of the Incas and the significance of Wiñay Wayna in their civilization.
Inti Punku & Machu Picchu.
Our path then leads us to the Sun Gate or Inti Punku, sitting majestically at 2,720 m (8,924 ft). At the Sun Gate you will get the first views of Machu Picchu. The sight of the citadel from this vantage point is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
- We will join circuit 1B to explore the superior terrace and admire The Citadel from above.
As the day winds down, we will descend to Aguas Calientes, a town located at 2,040 m (6,692 ft). This charming town is the perfect place to rest and prepare for the exploration of Machu Picchu the following day. Time to relax and rest, enjoy your accommodation and a tasty dinner in any of the restaurants in the area.
